ISBN: 978-1742459264
Released in celebration for the 50th anniversary of Freedman Electronics, RØDE TRIP chronicles the story of a family business that grew from a storefront in Sydney’s inner west to become a pro-audio manufacture-export powerhouse delivering Australian-made microphones to 113 countries.
In essence, RØDE TRIP is a biography of RØDE Founder and Chairman Peter Freedman AM, and has all the ingredients of great storytelling: immigrants who worked hard and built a new life in a faraway land and experienced success and tragedy. A story of near annihilation and resurrection, of luck and timing, friendship and hard lessons. And, ultimately, it is an account of innovation and people coming together to serve a common purpose.
RØDE TRIP starts with Henry and Astrid Freedman’s emigration to Australia from Sweden to open a sound system installation and audio equipment retail store in 1967. Their son Peter Freedman took over the business at age 17 in 1975, due to his father’s failing health, and in 1987, nearly sent himself and the company bankrupt in the recession following the ’87 crash. Success began with a cheap studio condenser microphone which he modified and began selling to Australian Music shops. In a prescient move, he bucked the trends of manufacture and brought the means of production in-house in the early noughties.
Today, RØDE is an impeccable brand with over 150 products delivering pristine audio in every application for a microphone: studio, live performance, filmmaking, reporting and presenting. It is a rare example of an Australian company making world-class electronics and exporting it to the world, a fact saluted by former Federal Treasurer and current Australian Ambassador to the US, the Hon Joe Hockey, who wrote the book’s foreword.
Printed on 196 pages of heavy 157gsm paper and full of gorgeous photography, RØDE TRIP is luxuriously presented in an embossed slipcase and dressed with foil and a gold ribbon placemark. It’s a handsome addition to any studio or business space. Available to ship now.
